HOW LONG

CONCRETE LAST?

Long enough that the honest answer is a range too wide to plan with, and the reason it is that wide is the part worth having. What decides the life of a specific slab is the exposure it has to survive, the mix specified against that exposure, what actually arrived on the truck and how it was cured, which means the number for your driveway was set on the day it was poured rather than attached to concrete in general.

The Answer, In One Paragraph

The question has two problems and both of them are fixable. The first is that concrete is not one material. The second is that lasted is not one word.

Concrete is specified against an exposure class, meaning the environmental service condition it has to survive, and ACI 318 and ACI 332 define those categories. Two driveways poured the same week in the same city can be specified against different exposures, receive different mixes, and be cured differently, which makes a single published lifespan a statement about neither of them. What you can establish for your slab is which exposure it was specified against and what was actually delivered, and that is a fact rather than an average.

I. Why every source gives a different number

They are not contradicting each other. They are answering different questions.

If you have read four ranges and none of them agreed, that is not sloppiness. Each one is a real answer to a question that was never stated out loud.

They are describing different exposures. A slab that sees freeze thaw cycling, one that sees de icing salt, one in sulfate bearing soil and one in a mild dry climate are four different service conditions. The categories exist precisely because the environment is a design input, not a footnote.

They are describing different specifications. Within any one exposure, the mix, the water to cement ratio, the air content and the supplementary cementitious material strategy all move. Concrete is a family of materials assembled per job, and a lifespan quoted for the family does not transfer to a member of it.

They are describing different work. A structural element designed by an engineer and a residential driveway ordered by square footage are both concrete and are not the same undertaking. Numbers migrate between those contexts easily and quietly.

And they are using lasted to mean different things. Structurally sound, cosmetically acceptable, and not yet replaced are three separate thresholds that arrive in three different years. Most published ranges never say which one they mean.

The one to fix first Decide what lasted means to you before you go looking for a number. A homeowner who cares about the slab holding load and a homeowner who cares about it looking good from the street are asking two questions with two answers, and confusing them is what turns an ordinary surface issue into a panic and a real structural problem into a shrug.
II. What actually gets specified

Not a lifespan. An exposure class.

This is the substitution that turns an unanswerable question into an answerable one, and it is the same move every page in this corpus makes.

Exposure class is the environmental service condition a concrete mix is specified against. The governing codes are ACI CODE-318-25 for structural concrete and ACI CODE-332-20 for residential concrete. It is the input that strength, water to cement ratio, air content and supplementary cementitious material strategy all follow from, and residential concrete is still frequently ordered by a default that leaves the input undeclared.

So the version of your question that has a factual answer is not how long does concrete last. It is what was this slab built to survive, and did what arrived match what was specified. Both halves of that are recordable on the day and neither is visible afterwards.

What does the batch ticket say arrived?

The batch ticket is the producer's third party record of what was actually in the truck. It already exists on an ordinary residential pour, and nothing in the ordinary process puts a copy in the owner's hands.

III. The four variables that set your number

All four were decided in one day. None of them are visible now.

Concrete arrives as a liquid, is finished by hand, and passes out of the crew's hands within hours. Much of what governs how it performs over its service life is decided inside that window, and it leaves no trace the eye can read.

What was specified

The exposure class the mix was designed against. The governing codes are ACI CODE-318-25 for structural concrete and ACI CODE-332-20 for residential concrete. A finished slab does not show which one was chosen, or whether one was chosen at all.

What actually arrived

The batch ticket is the ready mix producer's record of what was in the truck. It is the difference between what was ordered and what arrived, and those are not always the same document.

The conditions on the day

Air temperature, concrete temperature, humidity, wind, how long the truck waited and when finishing started. Live facts for a few hours, then gone. The weather half is a public record you can still retrieve.

How it was cured

What was done to the slab after the finishers left, and for how long. Often overlooked or cut short, particularly when budgets and timelines are under pressure, and it happens after the crew has gone.

There is also a set of variables nobody controlled. Ground movement, loading, drainage and time are real and they act on every slab regardless of how well the first four were handled. Documentation captures the controllable ones. It does not remove the others, and a page that implied otherwise would be overselling.

IV. What to do with this

Two different answers depending on where you are standing.

If the concrete is not poured yet

Ask what exposure class the mix is specified to and why that one, and listen for a category plus a reason drawn from your site rather than a number and nothing else. Then ask whether you will receive the batch ticket, and what you will be holding in writing at completion. Those three questions do more for the life of the slab than any lifespan figure you could be quoted, because they are about the inputs rather than about an average.

If the concrete is already in the ground

Pin down the exact pour date first, because everything else is retrieved by date. Then ask your contractor for the batch ticket, and the plant that batched the load if the contractor cannot produce it, since a plant may hold its own copy on whatever retention schedule that plant uses. Pull the archived weather for the pour date, which NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information publish free by station. That gets you three of the four variables after the fact.

If you are trying to decide whether something is wrong right now

Start a dated series before you start diagnosing. Photograph from a fixed position, dated, with something in frame for scale, and repeat in 90 days. A bid that names what is being delivered can be compared to another one, and a bid that names only a number cannot.

How can I tell how much life my existing concrete has left?

Not from the surface alone, and anyone offering a figure from a photograph is estimating rather than measuring. What is available to you is the record: the exact pour date, the batch ticket showing what actually arrived, the archived weather for that date, and a dated photo series establishing whether anything is stable or changing. Those turn the question from a prediction into a set of facts, which is as close to an answer as this question has.

Does sealing concrete make it last longer?

Surface treatment and mix specification are different levers and PSIP does not recommend products. What is worth knowing before spending on a treatment is which exposure your slab was specified against, because the environmental condition a slab has to survive is the thing any protective measure is meant to address. Deciding that in the absence of the specification is buying a solution before establishing the problem.

If my concrete fails early, can I do anything about it?

Your position depends almost entirely on what can be established about the original work. A record of what was specified and what was delivered is the factual ground a warranty conversation or a claim would be argued from, which is why the closeout packet matters years after the crew has left. Without one, a dispute is one person's memory against another's, and the party holding a dated record is in a materially different position from the party who is not.

Does concrete keep getting stronger over time?

Strength gain over time and durability over decades are different properties, and this question usually conflates them. Whether a slab serves for a long time is governed by the exposure it faces and the mix specified against that exposure, together with what actually arrived and how it was cured, rather than by strength alone. That is why exposure class rather than a strength figure is the input the rest of the specification follows from.
