What ASR actually is
Alkali-silica reaction is a reaction between alkali hydroxides in cement paste and reactive silica in aggregates. It produces a reaction product that precipitates in confined space, generating solidification pressure that fractures the concrete from within. By the time cracking appears, the damage is structural and irreversible.
What fly ash was doing
Fly ash reacted with calcium hydroxide and bound the alkalis, keeping them from driving the reaction. It was the invisible shield inside every shell. When it left the mix, the shield left too. The concrete looked identical. The chemistry was broken.
Why pools are uniquely vulnerable
Shells are in permanent contact with water, the catalyst for gel expansion. Vertical shotcrete dries unevenly, creating hydration gradients that accelerate the reaction at the most vulnerable zones, and residential pools have had no documentation standard to catch a compromised mix before the shell is shot.
The legal reality
When a shell fails from ASR, a builder with no batch ticket, no SCM verification, and no protocol record has no defense. PSIP Aquatic creates that record before the shell is shot, during the shoot, and in the signed certificate delivered at completion.

THE TIER 1 SCM SPECIFICATION.

PSIP Aquatic specifies categories of chemistry, not brand product stacks. The protocol scores the work. It does not recommend products. There are two Tier 1 categories, both supply-chain stable, both with strong evidence.

A verified Tier 1 SCM batched at plant. The category requires three functions for any shell admixture: pozzolanic reaction to bind alkalis and prevent ASR, internal curing to maintain hydration on vertical surfaces, and viscosity modification to reduce rebound and improve shell density.

Class F Fly Ash
Verified at batch ticket, 25 to 30 percent replacement minimum
Allowable as Tier 2 when the batch ticket confirms Class F status with source documentation. Because Class F supply is not reliable across all regions, certified builders verify availability per pour and shift to Tier 1A or Tier 1B when Class F cannot be confirmed. Class C is not equivalent and is not accepted.

Pool Deck Tier 1 Admixture
Colloidal nano silica admixture, batched at plant
Specified for all cast-in-place pool deck and coping concrete surrounding the shell. The same Tier 1 chemistry applied to the horizontal flatwork that completes the pool system. PSIP Aquatic treats the entire pool as one documented project, with deck and shell separately documented on the batch ticket.

Low-Temperature Pozzolan Accelerator
Reaction accelerator additive, per technical data sheet
When delivery temperature at the nozzle is below 55 degrees, the pozzolanic reactions the shell depends on slow significantly. A low-temperature accelerator restores those reactions at lower temperatures, maintaining ASR protection and strength development even when ambient conditions fight against it.

The evidence base

TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF FIELD DATA.

Tier 1A, Natural Pozzolan

Roman builders specified natural pozzolan from Pozzuoli for the Pantheon, built in 126 AD and still standing, and for harbor structures still functional after two thousand years. Modern petrographic analysis of marine Roman concrete documented crystal formation in the pozzolan-bound matrix that continues to strengthen the concrete over time. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation specified natural pozzolan for Hoover Dam, and field cores extracted in later decades show continued strength gain consistent with ongoing pozzolanic reaction. No other ASR mitigation strategy has comparable field evidence.

Tier 1B, Colloidal Nano Silica

Tier 1A natural pozzolan is the doctrinal foundation. Tier 1B colloidal nano silica is the modern, lab-verified parallel, with ASTM C1260 confirming a substantial reduction in ASR-induced mortar expansion. PSIP Aquatic accepts either Tier 1 chemistry, documented on the batch ticket. The choice is the builder's, the verification is not optional. The batch ticket is the record that the protection was present before the shell was shot.

Temperature protocol

THE COLD WEATHER DECISION TREE.

A two-tier system based on real forecast conditions, not blanket requirements that add cost without justification. Most Sun Belt pool builds never trigger anything beyond standard protocol.

55°+
Standard Protocol
No modifications. The standard Aquatic checklist applies. The specified Tier 1 SCM handles ASR and internal cure as documented.
40 to 55°
Caution Range
Verify concrete temperature at the nozzle exceeds 50 degrees. Add a low-temperature pozzolan accelerator if delivery temp is below 55. Document temperature on the checklist.
40° in 72hr
Reschedule or Protect
If 40 degrees is forecast within 72 hours of the shoot, reschedule if possible. If unavoidable, insulate the shell and monitor temperature at 24-hour intervals.
Below 40°
Do Not Shoot
Certified builders reschedule when ambient temperature at placement is below 40 degrees. This is a quality decision, not a scheduling preference.

Cold weather thresholds, accelerator triggers, and reschedule criteria are subject to Technical Advisory Council pre-review and refinement once the Council is seated, per the locked TAC governance model.

Per project spec, typical residential 4 to 6 inches.
Cold Weather Trigger
Below 40 degrees forecast within 72 hours, reschedule.
PSIP Aquatic
Shotcrete, Gunite, Pool Shells
Primary Tier 1 SCM
Tier 1A or Tier 1B at plant, providing pozzolanic reaction, ASR mitigation, and internal cure. Tier 1B adds viscosity modification for shotcrete.
Pre-Hydration
Rebar cage and substrate pre-wetted. Bond layer protection is critical in vertical shotcrete.
Curing
Above 85 degrees, wet burlap or misting 48 to 72 hours. Below 85, approved compound plus the Tier 1 internal cure.
Thickness
Minimum 6 inches, measured and documented at three or more points per wall panel.
Cold Weather Triggers
Below 55 degrees delivery, add a low-temperature accelerator. Below 40 forecast, reschedule.
